You should have seen the look on my face when I heard that Ms. G was going to “force” the guitar on us. I am a lot of things, but I am definitely not an instrument player. I had already embraced the idea of failing before stepping into the room. Learning guitar began with sheer terror. The first couple of minutes I could handle, they were straightforward instructions on taking care of the foreign object--Then came the playing. I think my mindset was what blew it out of proportion. I quickly realized that it wasn’t as horrific or terrifying as I made it out to be. It was something new, something out of my comfort zone. However, guitar is on the great list of things one can master with simple effort and practice. Our class was going at an alarmingly fast rate and I wasn’t left behind like I thought I would be. What you had to do was simple. Peruse the notes. Start slow. Practice. Pay attention. I’m not saying it was a piece of cake, though. Your fingers do hurt and there will always be someone better than you, but in the end the sense of accomplishment from “mastering” the basics of something brand new is worth it.
